Learning In Action, Coach as Instrument: Connecting With Ourselves and Others

This Week's Attunement

“It is said that in breathing man recapitulates the rhythm of the universe. When the mind is fastened to the rhythm of breathing, it tends to become absorbed and calm. Whether on or off the court, I know of no better way to begin to deal with anxiety than to place the mind on one’s breathing process.”

― W. Timothy Gallwey, The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance

The extraordinary nature of our ordinary breath is nothing short of profound. Our breath has the power to calm us, to activate us, to connect us with ourselves and with consciousness itself. Supporting our clients in simple breathing techniques may be one of the most useful resourcing techniques we can provide them.

Here’s a guided breathing exercise you can use in your coaching practice.

Please Hear What I'm Not Saying
Poetry by Charles C. Finn

We all wear masks of one kind or another. And our work is to see, accept and love the person behind the mask (ourselves and others). And to do that means seeing and believing that behind every mask is a human just like us, a fragile, vulnerable, lovable person who was once a child like us, who is doing the best they can. That the other person carries the same life energy, seed of consciousness, and divine essence that we possess. We must see beyond the mask to the kindred soul beneath.

What's Inspiring Me
So I can continue to do what I do and inspire my clients as well
Falling in Love with the World
By Tara Brach

This four-minute video is a beautiful reminder of the inherent necessity of our connectedness with ourselves, others, the planet, and all of life. Because when we aren’t connected, when we can’t see others, all of life as part of us, we can objectify it. And when we objectify any person or living thing, we can easily hurt or damage it (and in so doing, ourselves).
