Coach as Instrument: Peeling Back the Layers

This Week's Attunement

The more work I do on myself, the more work I see there is to do. :)

My family was in town this weekend. And I could see how influenced I was to follow age-old patterns — to give in to the strong-willed brother, to view in-laws through an old, outdated lens.

After spending the day with family, I found myself in bed, scratching my head about what I thought and said and questioning some of what had been on autopilot for me.

Thankfully, I have family members I can talk with about such things. What became clear was:

1) My perspective is narrow and filtered through my experience, and others can and do have a very different perspective of the exact same events.

2) My perspectives of family members and events are heavily influenced by the judgments of other family members, even more than my direct experience.

Maybe all this is IOTTMCO as a professor of mine used to say (Intuitively Obvious To The Most Casual Observer). And why am I sharing this?

This peeling back the layers of ourselves is never really done (And there's nothing like visiting family to accelerate the process!). The more I peel back, the more I see there is to peel. And I don't know how much it matters which method, technique, or approach I use for doing it, as long as I keep doing it. Because only by peeling back our layers to find the soul that lies within can we find that of our clients.
