Coach as Instrument: A Weekly Attunement

Learning In Action

In this time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, it’s never been more important for us to be the witness of our experience. To turn our attention inward toward our own reactions, and find our center so that those around us can find theirs.

The Vietnamese monk, Thich Nhat Hanh once said:

“When the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates if everyone panicked all would be lost. But if even one person on the boat remained calm and centered, it was enough. It showed the way for everyone to survive.”

Each of us can be the calm, centered person in the boat. Many times, nothing more is necessary. You have the training. You are enough. Nothing needs to change for you to be a blessing for your clients, your family, and beyond.

We are here in the boat with you.

Welcome to the first edition of Coach as Instrument, a weekly attunement designed to support your work and journey as a coach.

Each week you’ll receive a variety of tidbits of what’s keeping me current, what’s inspiring me, what I’m learning, or what I’m pondering, all intended to inspire and support you as you champion transformative change in others.

Here we go.

What's Keeping Me Current

So that I have a better understanding of my client's context

Remote Work (and Remote Workers) Are Here To Stay
In the US, we are experiencing a job seekers employment market and employees are quitting rather than going back to the office. Employers who force employees back to the office may find themselves with lots of job openings and at a disadvantage in finding top talent.

What I'm Learning

So I can improve myself as a coach, as a human

"The people who hold the contradictions and resolve them in themselves are the saviors of the world. They are the only real agents of transformation, reconciliation, and newness" — Richard Rohr

One of the most challenging things leaders and organizations can do is to hold and honor two seemingly opposite values or goals. Helping our clients navigate polarities whether within themselves or among their teams, can be enormously valuable. New to the concept of polarities? See this lovely overview from Kelly Lewis, author of Navigating Polarities.

What's Inspiring Me

So I can continue to do what I do and inspire my clients as well

“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always”. — Robin Williams

Robin Williams was undoubtedly one of the most brilliantly funny and creative people who have ever lived. Most people know that Robin Williams died by suicide. What was later revealed by medical experts and autopsy is that he was suffering from dementia due to a Lewy Body disease. He, quite literally, was fighting a battle that no one, not even himself, knew about. We need no more reason to heed his words to be kind, always.
